👀 Guest: Fotini Kondyli, ATH

We’re excited to host Fotini at Desired Pocket for a bibliography session. She will join Natassa Pappa, the founder of Desired Landscapes, for a one-hour discussion about how we unknowingly weave antiquities into modern urban life, making the city itself a living, breathing archaeology of the present. We will skim through five of her favorite books to reflect on how ancient ruins become our meeting points, wayfinders, and companions in the stories we create every day.

Fotini fell in love with archaeology from a young age as a way to understand herself and make sense of the world around her. Now a professor of Archaeology at the University of Virginia, she explores the connections between ancient and modern cities—especially through her work in the Athenian Agora and her focus on the lives of ordinary people. A passionate field archaeologist, Fotini has worked in Greece, Turkey, Albania, and beyond, always searching for the stories hidden in everyday spaces. Her current research, Inhabiting Byzantine Athens, looks at how people shaped—and were shaped by—the city’s past.
