A set of 8 postcards documenting the Athenian vernacular.

This is a collection of 8 shop signs found around
Athens, during our Desired Walks. Some of them
don’t exist anymore while others are ghost signs for shut stores. There is only one to be found preserved inside a private space.

Apart from all being traces of a lost city and its commercial activity, they all share a sense of craft. Be it the way they follow the building’s facade, the spacing between type, or even the form of the letter itself.

On some, Greek type borrows elements from the Latin alphabet, resulting in rare design statements, awkward to the Greek eye, while on
others, lost cursive characters remind us of our native script traditions.

Whichever the case,
vernacular typography holds the city’s history.
